Key Events
The current situation began in 1994 when Russian troops invaded the region to squash the independence movement. This event had taken place three years after Chechnya had gained independence in 1991. Those opposing the revolution are the politicians in Moscow. The people of Russia are torn but more are opposed because of terrorist attacks that have been blamed on the separatists. The separatists consist of many groups like native Chechens and radical Muslims. The most notable group of people is the Jihadists. The leader of the separatists are pictured to the left. Shamil Basayev is on the left and Aslan Maskhadov is on the right. Shamil Basayev was killed in 2006 but was responsible for the some of the larger terrorist attacks including the Beslan school siege. The key events that fueled the revolutionary fire are: When they were conquered by Russia in 1858, when all Chechen people were deported to Siberia and Central Asia in 1944, and finally when an independent Chechnya was invaded by Russia in 1994. The people have had frustrations with the Russian government because they have been treated terribly under them and have been wrongfully conquered by them twice. The most used social media has easily been YouTube. Separatists have used YouTube to make announcements, claim responsibility for terrorists attacks, and discuss plans for the future.
